When people ask me this question, I often sense a quiet wonder beneath it. We look at the beauty of the world—the rhythm of seasons, the mystery of life, the order and harmony of creation—and we feel that something more is at work than chance. This question touches our longing to know not just that God created, but how His living presence continues to breathe life into all that exists.
The Bible gives us a gentle but profound image at the very first page of Scripture. In the Book of Genesis, we are told that “the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” Before light was spoken, before form and beauty emerged, the Spirit was already there—quietly present, lovingly active. The Spirit is not a distant force but God’s own breath, preparing creation to receive life, order, and meaning.
The Church understands the Spirit as the giver of life. What the Father wills and the Son speaks into being, the Spirit brings to fullness. The Spirit sustains creation from within, holding it together and guiding it toward its purpose. This is why creation is not cold or mechanical; it is alive with intention. Every living thing bears, in some way, the gentle touch of the Spirit who delights in life and growth.
For us today, this truth changes how we see the world—and ourselves. The same Spirit who hovered over the waters at creation is at work in your life now, quietly shaping, renewing, and calling you toward wholeness. When we care for creation, when we choose life, when we open our hearts to God’s grace, we are cooperating with the Spirit’s ongoing work. Creation is not finished; it is still being lovingly sustained and renewed by God’s Spirit.
Reflection
May we learn to see the world not as something merely used, but as something lovingly held by God. And may we welcome the Spirit who still whispers life into our hearts, just as He did at the dawn of creation.
