What Does It Mean to Walk by Faith?

To walk by faith means trusting God’s promises even when we cannot see the way, learning to follow Him with hope.

To “walk by faith” is one of those phrases we often hear in church, yet it can sound mysterious. Many people have asked me what it really means — does it mean ignoring reality, or pretending everything is fine? Not at all. Walking by faith is not about closing our eyes to life’s struggles; it’s about opening our hearts to God’s presence within them.

When St. Paul writes, “We walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7), he’s inviting us to live from a deeper vision — one that sees with the eyes of the soul rather than just the eyes of the body. To walk by faith means to trust that God is at work even when we cannot yet see the outcome. It is the choice to believe that His promises are true, even in the silence, even in the waiting.

Faith is not a one-time act but a daily journey. Every morning we choose again to trust — when life feels uncertain, when prayers seem unanswered, when we are asked to love, forgive, or begin again. In those moments, faith becomes more than belief; it becomes movement — a step toward God, guided by His Word rather than our own understanding.

The walk of faith is not without struggle. Abraham left his homeland not knowing where he was going. Peter stepped out of the boat before he knew he could walk on water. Mary said yes to an angel without knowing what her future would hold. In each of these, faith meant surrender — letting God lead even when the path was unclear.

And for us, too, walking by faith means learning to listen, to obey, and to rest in God’s love. It means trusting that His hand holds ours, even through darkness. The road may twist and turn, but His presence is steady.

Lord, teach us to walk by faith, not by sight — to see Your light even in the dark, and to trust that every step brings us closer to You.
