Why Does God Never Change?

We long for stability and trust; this question comes from our desire to know if God’s love stays constant through all things.

Many people have asked me this over the years, and I understand why. Our lives shift so quickly—people change, circumstances change, even our own hearts change from one season to the next. So when we ask why God never changes, we’re really asking whether His love is steady enough to hold our lives. It’s a question that springs from the deepest place in us, where we long for someone who will never abandon us.

In Scripture, God reveals Himself as the One who simply is. In the book of Exodus, when Moses asks God for His name, the Lord answers, “I AM.” It’s a quiet but profound way of saying: I am the One who is constant, faithful, and unchanging. And throughout the Bible, we see this truth echoed again and again. Where we are fragile, God is firm. Where we are uncertain, He remains the same.

The Church teaches that God’s unchanging nature comes from His perfection. Change is something we experience because we are still growing, learning, and becoming. But God is already fullness itself — perfect goodness, perfect truth, perfect love. There is nothing lacking in Him, nothing that needs improvement, nothing that can fade or weaken. Because He is perfect, He cannot change. His promises are not temporary, His mercy does not run out, and His heart does not shift with the tides of history.

And what does this mean for your daily life? It means that every time you turn to God, you meet the same faithful Father who loved you yesterday and will love you tomorrow. When you fail, His mercy doesn’t shrink. When you feel alone, His presence hasn’t moved. When the world feels shaken, God is still the rock beneath your feet. His unchanging nature is not cold or distant — it is the reason we can trust Him completely.

May your heart rest in the quiet truth that God’s love does not rise and fall with your strength. In His unchanging goodness, you will always find a home.
