How Does the Church Continue Christ’s Mission of Salvation?

This question reaches into the heart of Christian faith, asking how Christ’s saving work remains alive and active in the world today.

Many people have asked me this with sincerity: If Christ has already accomplished our salvation, what role does the Church still play? It’s a beautiful question, because it shows a desire to see faith not as something locked in the past, but as a living presence that continues to touch real lives.

When we look at the Gospel, we see that Christ did not leave behind a book or an idea alone—He formed a community. Before ascending to the Father, He entrusted His mission to the Church, not as a replacement for Himself, but as His living Body in the world. In this way, Christ continues to reach humanity through human hands, voices, and hearts.

The Church carries out this mission first by proclaiming the Good News. Wherever the Gospel is preached—whether in a cathedral, a village chapel, or a quiet conversation—Christ is still calling people to repentance, hope, and new life. The Church does not invent this message; she faithfully hands on what she herself has received.

Salvation also flows through the sacraments. In Baptism, Christ still welcomes souls into divine life. In the Eucharist, He continues to offer His Body and Blood for the life of the world. In Reconciliation, His mercy still lifts the burden of sin. Through these sacred moments, salvation becomes personal, not abstract—God meets us where we truly are.

Finally, the Church continues Christ’s mission through love in action. Every act of charity, every effort to heal wounds, defend dignity, and stand beside the suffering makes Christ’s saving love visible. When the Church serves the poor, comforts the lonely, and works for justice, she reveals a Savior who never stopped loving the world.

A Closing Reflection

Christ’s mission did not end with His Ascension—it was entrusted to hearts willing to love as He loved. May we each discover our place within this mission, allowing His salvation to pass through our lives to others.
